VIDEO DEMO PLAYLIST

The Big One is a JFET based Overdrive, Distortion, and at extreme settings, FUZZ. Utilizing hand-selected Through-Hole J201 and 2N5457 JFETS, The Big One creates warm tube like tones with drive ranging from a mild crunch to a wooly distortion. The SAG pot allows for further tone mangling by reducing the bias voltage of the middle JFET. Starve at Minimum is clean (as clean as it's gonna get)  - as the Starve knob is turned up, the signal gets richer with a full low end - at max settings,  the JFET is pushed to the edge of it's operational range.

JFET's allow for an amp like response, and there is gain for days. Throughout the range of drive, the signal retains punchiness with a tight response. The Treble and Bass controls offer flexibility in tone shaping.

Separate Treble and Bass controls allow fine tuning of the frequency response, and remain useful throughout their range.

The Big One can function off 9 volt or 18 volt power supplies - Higher voltage supplies yield increased headroom and volume. A 2.1mm DC Center Negative power supply is required - there are no battery clips in my pedals.

Controls:
VOL - Adjusts  Output Level
GAIN - Amount of distortion
SAG - Reduces the voltage provided for one of the transistors causing distortion
TREBLE -Adjusts upper frequencies
BASS - Increases lower frequencies and Distortion

Internal Bias Trimmers are set to recommended voltages before shipping. The range of the SAG control can be adjusted - the units ship with the SAG control offering cleaner tones at minimum with a more full throated response as it is increased, but it can be adjusted so that the minimum setting is full voiced while high Sag settings create a ragged fuzz.  Players that gravitate towards higher gain sounds may prefer this, and can be adjusted before shipping if the buyer requests.

Biasing The Big One

Bias is a DC voltage applied to the AC signal (the sound from the guitar) to set the middle operating point in a circuit. Depending on where that middle point is set, circuits can create asymmetric distortion which can be pleasing. The Big One has 3 internal trimmers with test points for each one. If you'd like to check or adjust your bias on the pedal, open it up and place the negative lead of your multimeter to ground (easy places are the center lug on the footswitch or the ground connection on the 1/4" Jack) and place the red lead on the test point for which JFET you want to adjust. Set your multimeter to DC voltage and turn the trimmer, keeping an eye on the voltage the multimeter is showing - but it's also perfectly ok to do this by ear. When shipped, each Big One has an enclosed card noting the settings as shipped. When settings the Bias on Q2, remember that it is also controlled Sag. Set Sag control to either maximum or minimum and twist the trimmer until signal goes away, and then back it off to where you just hear signal. The selected JFET's will remain operational through the full range of Sag - you're just tweaking the outer limits (either to make it more clean at minimum or more fuzzy at maximum.
